Carol Ann DeMers - East Ryegate, Vt.

Carol Ann DeMers, 82, of Manchester Drive, died on Saturday, December 20, 2014, at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, N.H., following a period of failing health.

Carol was born in Worcester, Mass., on Nov. 1, 1932, to Axel and Bernice (Gineikis) Gunnard. She was a graduate of North High School, Class of 1951, in Worcester. On Nov. 26, 1955, she married Ernest W. DeMers.

Following high school, she did clerical work at an insurance company. In 1975, Carol graduated from the University of Rhode Island with her BS Degree in Food and Nutrition and remained an avid student of this. Following graduation, she went to work for Providence Gas Company. Following her time at Providence Gas, she worked with her husband at H&H Machine and Tool Company in Forestdale, R.I.

Carol and Ernest began building their home in East Ryegate in 1985 and became permanent residents in 1995, having moved from Cumberland, R.I. She was a member of the Ryegate Corner Presbyterian Church.

She and Ernest were active square dancers, belonging to the Country Corner Squares of Lyndonville, Vt., and the Totem Twirlers in Rhode Island. When traveling, they would join square dance groups around the country. They traveled extensively across the country in their motor home. They visited six of the seven continents, including going above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle.

Carol loved nature and being outdoors. She participated in bicycle tours with their Rhode Island friends via Vermont Bike Tours, played tennis and belonged to a club in Rhode Island, swam with the Aquamaids in Worcester, and cross-country skied in the winter. Carol was always willing to give of her time in assisting others.

She was predeceased by a son, Ernest Peter DeMers, on Dec. 7, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Ernest W. DeMers of East Ryegate; a daughter, Lisa Boss and husband Earl of Cumberland, R.I.; three grandchildren, Kevin Boss of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Elizabeth and Samantha DeMers, both of South Carolina; three brothers, Russell Gunnard of Lake Wylie, S.C., Bruce Gunnard, and Mark Gunnard of Holden, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

A calling hour will be on Saturday, January 10th, from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. with a memorial service to begin at 11 A.M. at the Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. Rev. George Hemway, chaplain at the Grafton County Nursing Home, will officiate.
