Bids to be opened Wednesday on 5-year trash, recycling service

Kent Street garage now accepting yard waste

CUMBERLAND – The town has once again opened a drop location for summer yard waste disposal, as officials wait to inspect bids on sanitation services for the next five years.

Last Friday, June 9, unlimited curbside yard waste collection in Cumberland came to an end for the spring season. The Kent Street garage is now accepting yard waste in brown biodegradable bags.

Curbside yard waste collection, by contract with Waste Management, is limited to 18 weeks each year. To provide the best service to residents, Mayor Bill Murray says, the 18 weeks run during the year’s heaviest volume times, spring yard cleanup and fall leaf raking seasons.

One of Murray’s primary goals in seeking new bids on trash service this year, instead of renewing with Waste Management for escalating fees, is to see if the town can get an extension on its 18-week curbside yard waste collection program. When the curbside program isn’t in place, Murray contends, residents end up throwing yard waste into the regular trash.

Opening the garage “is a temporary thing,” as town officials wait to see “how to move forward” with a waste disposal provider, said Murray. The mayor has said he’s willing to re-sign with Waste Management, but at a more affordable price.

Bids from a likely three bidders will be opened on Wednesday, June 21. Murray said he expects the three companies seeking to provide trash and recycling services to Cumberland to offer costs on a five-year contract.

Officials will likely have a final package set for review by Monday, June 26, said Murray. He said he wants to be able to enter into the next contract on July 17.

Residents are reminded that yard waste cannot be mixed with regular household trash or recycling. The Kent Street garage will accept yard waste in brown biodegradable bags only (no loose yard waste) Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday drop-off will be available from 8 a.m. to noon. Yard waste may not be dropped off during closed hours.
