NORWELL, Mass. – Lincoln High senior Samantha Andrews earned All-New England honors in the discus at last Saturday afternoon’s New England Track & Field Championships at Norwell High School by placing fourth with a throw of 129 feet, 4 inches.

The University of Rhode Island-bound standout also took 17th place in the shot put with a throw of 36-1½.

Cumberland also saw two members of its girls’ team fare well at the meet. Senior Julia Dempsey placed 11th in the 3,200 meters in a school-record time of 11:21.34, and junior Grace Henson took 27th place in the 1,600 in 5:32.52.

On the boys’ side, Cumberland senior Alex Mazika placed 20th in the discus with a personal-best throw of 137-5; his classmate, Ben Drezek, finished 22nd in the 3,200 (9:52.13), and Lincoln junior Evan Grivers was 20th in the javelin (127-5).

Andrews, Dempsey, Drezek, and Grivers will be among the local athletes who will compete in this weekend’s New Balance National Championships at North Carolina AT&T’s Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C.

Andrews and Grivers will be part of a group of LHS athletes who will compete in the hammer. Drezek, who holds the state record in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, will again compete in that event, while Dempsey and Henson will join junior Ana O’Callaghan and freshman Adah Anderson on a 4x1-mile relay team.
