Teen's body recovered from Georgiaville Pond

SMITHFIELD – The body of a 19-year-old male was recovered by divers in Georgiaville Pond late Tuesday evening.

The Smithfield Police Department identified the man as Christian Araujo of Pawtucket.

Police Chief Dave Chartier said the department was notified of a possible missing swimmer in the Smithfield pond around 8 p.m. Emergency personnel were told the swimmer was trying to swim back to shore from a nearby island when he went under.

The chief has also said that the group was swimming in a restricted area of the pond where depths could reach 20 feet.

The pond is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. No lifeguards were working at the time of the drowning.

The swimmer's body was recovered at 9:45 p.m. by divers.

This is not the first drowning at Georgiaville Pond off St. Michaels Way. in September 2015, 19-year-old Augustin Kabura of Providence died while swimming with friends.

The Smithfield Recreation Department requires all beach patrons to purchase either a daily beach pass or a seasonal beach pass to use the facility.
