Track and field athletes place in top 25 at N.E. meet

NORWELL, Mass. – La Salle Academy sophomore and Smithfield native Joe dosReis and Ponaganset High senior Andrew Arsenault highlighted the area’s top finishers at last Saturday afternoon’s New England Track & Field Championships at Norwell High School, as dosReis, who took second place in the 1,500 (4:03.06) and 3,000 (8:47) at the previous weekend’s state championship meet, placed 12th in the 3,200 in a time of 9:34.38, and Arsenault finished 15th in the javelin with a throw of 155 feet, eight inches.

The Smithfield High girls’ team also posted three top-25 finishes. Senior Alex Guertin finished in a tie for 17th place in the pole vault at nine feet, senior Sydney Bagus placed 18th in the 800 in 2:21, and the 4x800 relay team of juniors Una Treanor and Gianna Marchetti, freshman Ashlyn Maio, and Bagus took 25th place in 10:18.04.

A handful of athletes will be back in action at this weekend’s New Balance National Championships at North Carolina AT&T, including Ponaganset junior Gianna Rao, who earned All-American honors in the girls’ nine-pound hammer at last year’s meet by taking sixth place with a 168-foot throw.
