Co-op hockey team loses, but sits in three-way tie for first

SMITHFIELD – A week after moving into a tie for first place by skating to a big win over previously undefeated Pilgrim, the Johnston/North Providence co-op team suffered a 6-2 defeat to the Woonsocket/Scituate co-op squad in Division III action at Smithfield Municipal Rink.

The loss dropped Johnston/NP’s record to 4-2-1, but the locals remained atop the standings with Pilgrim because the Patriots, which is also 4-2-1, suffered a 6-5 loss earlier that night to the West Warwick/Exeter-West Greenwich co-op team in West Warwick.

With a record of 4-3 (with an overtime loss), West Warwick/EWG is also tied for first place, and just a point below them in the six-team standings are Woonsocket/Scituate (3-2-2) and defending champion Mount Hope (4-4).

In the loss to Woonsocket/Scituate, the SpartaNovans grabbed a 4-0 lead after a period of play and never looked back. Woonsocket senior Jared Rivard netted a hat trick to lead the winners, while North Providence senior Brandon Tanguay scored his division-leading 12th goal of the season for Johnston/NP.

Johnston/NP will take this weekend off before returning to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 20, for a 6 p.m. game against Pilgrim at Thayer Arena.
