Car tax reimbursement checks sent out

CUMBERLAND – The town sent out about 10,000 rebate checks to Cumberland residents who pay car taxes last week.

According to Mayor Bill Murray, it cost the town about $3.50 per check to send them out, so only those receiving rebates of $3 or more received something in the mail.

The 2,000 or so taxpayers with refunds of less than $3 will get a credit on their account, said Murray.

The entire process of giving reimbursements after the state began phasing in vehicle excise tax cuts last year was an “administrative nightmare,” said Murray, and took longer than expected.
