Get in and drive the International Auto Show this weekend

PROVIDENCE – The 2018 Northeast International Auto Show returns for a second year to Providence this weekend, Friday, Feb. 9, through Sunday, Feb. 11.

Show-goers at the Rhode Island Convention Center, 1 Sabin St., Providence, will get the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles experience, invited to drive and learn the capabilities of 12 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat vehicles.

Organizers are promising more than “250 of the hottest new cars and trucks” at the show, all for people to check out in one place on the floor of the Convention Center.

Dan Welcher, production executive of experiential marketing, said those testing out vehicles this weekend will get their choice between two or three vehicles from each brand. Dodge Challengers and Chargers are the most popular of the vehicles, he said.

“Everyone loves the muscle cars,” he said.

All participants will be entered into the 2018 FCA U.S. National Sweepstakes for a chance to win $45,000 toward a vehicle from those brands. A winner will be drawn early next year.

Visitors are allowed to drive as many times as they wish. These are on-street runs instead of a closed-course event, he said.

To date, there have been no infractions on the show’s test drives, said Welcher. Everyone testing out a vehicle is asked to drive as if they’re driving their own car, within the bounds of the law, he said. Hosts sit in the passenger seat and explain the features of the car as they go.

Actual driving time for each run lasts about 12 to 15 minutes, according to Welcher.

Attendees are invited to check out the Chrysler Pacifica, the Fiat 124 Spider, and the Jeep Compass, among others.

Prices to attend the Northeast International Auto Show are $11 for adults, $9 for senior citizens. All children ages 12 and younger get in free every show day when accompanied by a paying adult.

There is no extra charge for driving vehicles.

Drivers must be 18 years of age or older, must present a valid driver’s license, and must pass a Breathalyzer test to drive. Passengers must be 8 years old or older, and everyone must sign a waiver of liability.

Show hours are noon to 10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Test drives are available noon to 5 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
