Ricci wrestlers place ninth at RIPCOA state championship meet

CUMBERLAND – Eight days after wrapping up its third straight regular-season championship, the Ricci Middle School wrestling team gave a superb performance at the RIPCOA state championship meet at Cumberland High’s Wellness Center by placing ninth out of 39 schools with 86 points.

Six wrestlers finished among the top seven in their weight classes, and leading the way was Ben St, Laurent at 119 pounds and Kris Nelson at 140, who placed third. St. Laurent, an 8th-grader, had finished fifth at 119 at last year’s state meet.

Carl Picerno, who took sixth place at 112 pounds last season, finished fifth at 133. Eric Merhi (165) and Terrence Famogun (205) also placed sixth, and Matthew Bourke (180) took seventh.

Finishing 21st with 41½ points was Birchwood, and landing on the awards podium with fifth places were Kevin Veader (119) and Luis Herrera (150).
