COVENTRY – The North Providence Youth Wrestling Program brought just 11 wrestlers to the state championship tournament held Sunday at Coventry High, yet North Providence was still able to place 11th out of 40 teams with 83 points, just one shy of cracking the top 10.

Five wrestlers earned medals for placing in the top three of their respective weight classes. Brayden McKay (Bantam Division, 79 pounds) and Joey Vitolo (Intermediate Division, 105) captured state championships, Tate Pathoummahong (Bantam, 49) placed second, and Charlie Ford (Intermediate, 63) and Benjamin Taglianetti (Intermediate 105) took third places.

North Providence also had three Birchwood Middle School wrestlers grab top-four finishes. Kevin Veader, who placed fifth in last month’s RIPCOA state meet, took second place at 119, Zackary Raymond placed third at 165, and Louis Baez finished fourth at 92.

Also wrestling well, but just missing out on a spot on the awards podium, were Cody Bryant, Christopher Dorr, and Casey Caranci-Porter.

The coaches are Stefano Famiglietti and Rob Bello.
