Pendrak named National Merit Scholarship finalist

EAST PROVIDENCE – St. Mary Academy-Bay View senior Rebekah Pendrak, of North Providence, has been named a National Merit Scholarship finalist for 2018.

To become a finalist, the semifinalist and the student’s high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Each year around 1.6 million students take the PSAT, and Pendrak placed among the top 1 percent of all students nationwide. She is now one of 15,000 finalists in the country eligible for one of the 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $2,500 a year.
