Murray: One of town’s worst storms for outages

CUMBERLAND – Mayor Bill Murray said last Friday’s rain and wind storm was one of the worst the town has seen for power outages.

The town had approximately 5,800 residents with no power as of noon last Saturday. Roads were blocked and closed and many schools were without power. All roads were open and power at schools restored by 1 p.m. Saturday.

As of Sunday at 4 p.m., outages were down to approximately 300 and improving. As of 7 a.m. Monday, 50 homes remained without power, 30 of them in one badly hit area, on Oakwood Avenue.

The National Grid power outage map illustrated the frustration of many residents. In Monastery Heights, for example, a blue patch within the red patch showed residents losing power three hours earlier on Friday and getting it back well after most of the rest of the area was restored.

Murray thanked town employees for the job they did helping the town recover and keep residents safe, and thanked residents for their patience.
