Cumberland council postpones action on tax hike

CUMBERLAND – The Cumberland Town Council last Wednesday held off on considering Mayor Bill Murray’s proposal for a 21-cent tax hike after unbudgeted revenues came in more than $2 million higher than projected last spring.

Council member Scott Schmitt asked what the latest is that the council can approve the $66 million tax levy for the year ending June 30 and still get tax bills out by May 1. Finance Director Jason Parmelee said an April 18 vote, following a workshop on the finances of the plan, would likely suffice.
