Local students win science awards

Two local students who participated in the Rhode Island Science and Engineering Fair recently received top awards for their projects.

Jordyn Raftery, of Lincoln, who took first place at the La Salle Academy school science fair, earned a First Grant award at RISEF, which was held March 17 at Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick. Her project was titled “What is the Best Method of Bioremediation?”

Sree Dasari, of Cumberland, also a La Salle Academy student, was a Best in Fair finalist at RISEF and received a special award from the American Psychology Association for her behavioral science project. For her project, “Your mind as an interface – Approaching public speaking using VR,” Dasari made a 360-degree video of a classroom full of students and transferred it to a virtual reality headset, which she put on test subjects and studied their heart rates as they made a presentation to the virtual audience. Her goal is to use it to help people overcome fear of certain situations such as public speaking.

The students were honored along with other award winners at a ceremony at CCRI on March 22.
