Joao "John" Fernandes – Cumberland

Joao "John" Fernandes, 98, of Cumberland passed away Monday, May 7, 2018, at the Holiday Retirement Home, Manville.

He was the husband of Maria (Garcia) Fernandes, and they had been married for 73 years.

Born in Vila Verde, Portugal, he was the son of the late Sebastiao and Maria Emilia (Araujo) Fernandes. He moved to this country in 1959, settling in Middletown, later Pawtucket. He moved to Cumberland in 1965.

Mr. Fernandes life's work was as a tailor, beginning at the age of 12 years old continuing late into his 90s. He also was employed at Corning Glassworks in Central Falls for over 15 years.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church where he helped with many of the garments used at church functions. Among many interests he was a passionate sporting soccer fan.

Besides his beloved wife, he leaves his children, Maria DaCosta of Cumberland and Aderito "Manny" Fernandes of Pawtucket; his six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren as well as four great-great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Carlos Fernandes and he was predeceased by 17 siblings.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to John's Life Celebration which begins with visiting hours are Wednesday, May 9, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., in the J.J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., in the Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Drive, Cumberland. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
