Sen. Ciccone, FOP-13 share NPWLL regular-season title

NORTH PROVIDENCE – Senator Ciccone and FOP-13 NPPD earned a share of the North Providence West Little League’s Major Division regular-season championship by capturing their respective finales at Romano Field and concluding their schedules with 14-2 records.

On Monday night, Senator Ciccone posted a 9-0 triumph over Christiansen’s Fine Milk that was the ballclub’s fourth straight victory. Nathan Bautista pitched a superb one-hit shutout that saw him strike out 13 batters and Mazeo DiScullio led the offense with three hits and as many runs scored.

FOP-13, meanwhile, will head into the postseason with an eight-game win streak, thanks to its 12-5 victory over Mayor Lombardi last Wednesday night. Ethan Leveillee delivered the game’s biggest hit, a grand slam home run over the left-field fence.

Mayor Lombardi, which ended the regular season in third place with a 6-10 record, grabbed a 6-2 win over Barone Orthodontics, as Jacob Weidinger picked up the win by striking out 10 batters in five innings of work, and Brady Cabral guided the offense with two hits and four runs batted in.

Barone (4-12) also clinched fourth place with a 6-0 victory over Christiansen’s (2-14) that saw Corey Coughlin not only earn the win by pitching 5 2/3 innings and striking out 11 batters, but also lead the offense with three hits. Both teams will face each other again tonight at 7:30 p.m. in a play-in game for the fourth spot in the playoffs.

As for the rest of the playoffs, Senator Ciccone will be the top seed in the playoffs and FOP-13 will be the second seed. The tiebreaker for seeding in the playoffs is head-to-head competition, and since both ballclubs went 2-2 against each other during the regular season, the league flipped a coin to determine who would be the number one seed.

The best-of-three semifinals will begin on Friday night and continue next Monday, and if a third and deciding game is needed, it will be held next Wednesday. The winner of the Barone/Christiansen’s game will take on Senator Ciccone, while Mayor Lombardi will face FOP-13.

The best-of-three championship series will be played after the District I all-star tournament.
