Vasquez running for city council at-large

PAWTUCKET – Elena Vasquez, running on a platform of bringing residents of the city together, announced this week that she is running as a Democrat for Pawtucket City Council at-large.

“It is with great excitement that I announce my candidacy for the Pawtucket City Council,” said the school board member. “If elected, I will concentrate on creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness for all of our residents. Our city has tremendous potential, and we are accomplishing many great things. I would like to see us build off those accomplishments and make our city a place that its residents can not only be proud of, but also be an active participant in making it a better place to live.”

As a proud graduate of Varieur Elementary School, Slater Junior High School and Shea High School, where she was salutatorian, she said her lifelong home of Pawtucket has treated her well.

After graduating Shea, she received a bachelor’s degree in commerce organization and entrepreneurship from Brown University, then receiving her master’s degree in law and public policy from Northeastern University before returning to Brown as program manager for the College Advising Corps.

Vasquez said she has been a part of a number of accomplishments during her two years on the school board, including rising scores and graduation rates, improvements to school facilities, and enhanced safety.

If she is elected, Vasquez’s platform would include maintaining fiscal stability, progress in schools, creating programs of inclusiveness, and supporting efforts to keep residents safe.
