NS police arrest man after tip from resident tying him to video

NORTH SMITHFIELD – North Smithfield Police have arrested a man for allegedly stealing items from unlocked motor vehicles after a video circulated on social media led to a tip from a resident.

Thomas Fisher, 35, was charged with five counts of tampering with an auto and five counts of larceny from a motor vehicle. According to police, Fisher was seen walking on Eddie Dowling Highway at about 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3. A resident called police to say that Fisher matched the description of a man seen rummaging through a vehicle on Old Smithfield Road in a video. The video had previously been circulated by police on social media after reports that someone was stealing items from unlocked vehicles on Old Smithfield Road, Sayles Hill Road and Woodland Road.

Detectives and patrol units made contact with Fisher and determined his tattoos were identical to the ones of the individual seen in the video. Police also executed a search warrant for the place where Fisher was staying and discovered several of the items that had been reported stolen. According to police, Fisher has previous convictions for larceny and tampering with an auto and is a District Court probation violator. He will be arraigned in Third District Court on Jan. 4.
