NORTH SMITHFIELD – The new convenience store under construction at 780 Great Road is nearing completion, with a projected opening date set for the last week of the month.

On Monday, the Town Council approved a victualing license for the new Seasons Corner Market that’s been taking shape over the past several months. In addition to a Shell gas station and convenience store, the location will include a Honey Dew Donuts inside the store.

David Orr, director of operations for Colbea Enterprises, told The Breeze crews are finishing up work at the location and will be ready to stock the shelves within the next few weeks.

“We’re looking at the store being set up probably in about two weeks and looking at being open the last week of January,” he said.

In addition to a victualing license, the council also approved a license for 24-hour operation for both the gas station and Honey Dew. Though Councilor Paul Zwolenski said he’s usually not in favor of extended-hours licenses, in this case, he said, the station’s proximity to Route 146 convinced him otherwise.

Councilor Claire O’Hara also raised concerns about safety, warning the company against leaving employees alone for late-night shifts. Orr said the company plans to have at least two people working in the station at all times, one on the convenience store side and one at Honey Dew.

“We take consideration for the safety of our employees,” he said.

Prior to the renovations, the location was the site of a six-pump Shell station with a service center and snack shop. In December 2018, representatives of the company approached the town with plans to tear down the service center and replace it with a modern, 3,600-square-foot convenience store. As part of the project, the pump stations were also rearranged and increased from six to 11 to allow for more vehicles.

Kudos to the Council for approving the 24 hour license for this location. Late night travelers and local late shift workers now have a place right off of 146 to gas up or grab a quick drink. Also, having another coffee option besides Dunkin' is a plus.

Nothing good happens after Midnight!
