Man dies after being hit by delivery driver on Hamlet Avenue

WOONSOCKET – Police announced Friday that Dennis Gilmartin, the city resident struck by a vehicle while crossing Hamlet Avenue Thursday evening, has died of his injuries.

Gilmartin, 67, was crossing the road Thursday around 7 p.m. when he was struck by a passing vehicle, according to an announcement by police. Woonsocket Police responded to the accident and delivered first aid to Gilmartin, who suffered traumatic injuries. Gilmartin was transported to Landmark Medical Center by rescue and later Rhode Island Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The operator of the vehicle, a 19-year-old delivery driver for Domino's Pizza, stayed on scene after the accident. At this time, said police, there's no evidence that distracted or impaired driving played a role in the incident. Hamlet Avenue, they noted, is a heavily traveled road, and Gilmartin was not using a nearby crosswalk.

Police said they're continuing to investigate the accident.
