Mazey's damaged by Smith Street fire

NORTH PROVIDENCE – Mazey's Restaurant, located at 2017 Smith St., was heavily damaged in a fire that broke out Friday afternoon.

The fire started around 1:15 p.m. and quickly became visible in the rear of the building, according to Mayor Charles Lombardi, whose office is located directly across the street in North Providence Town Hall.

“I ran out front and there it was. I could not believe the fire advanced as quick as it did,” he said.

By 3:30 p.m., firefighters from the North Providence Fire Department and other communities had extinguished the flames. Lombardi said the fire caused significant damage to the rear section of Mazey’s and also minor damage to the building next door, which houses Masala Indian and Pakistani Cuisine.

“The wind being what it was, it was mostly smoke damage into the building next door,” he said.

Lombardi said that no firefighters were injured in the blaze.

Though he said he would defer to the owner of the building, Lombardi said he is hopeful the building can be refurbished, since the front portion was left mostly unharmed.
