Town hires Wiegand as new planner

NORTH PROVIDENCE – The town has hired Brent Wiegand, an East Greenwich resident who has been working as planning technician for the town of Narragansett, as its new full-time town planner.

Wiegand replaces David Westcott, who was working on a part-time basis.

“He’s a younger fellow who seems like he has a lot of energy and comes with great reviews,” said Mayor Charles Lombardi on Monday. “The bottom line is Dave Westcott thought he would be the right guy for this job.”

Westcott, who announced for a story last week that he will be leaving town employment as he continues to battle cancer, interviewed candidates and recommended hiring Wiegand, said Lombardi.

Wiegand could not be reached by phone this week.

Dean Martilli, who’s worked on the town’s grant program, also sat in on interviews, said Lombardi. Hiring Wiegand as a full-time employee allows the town to shift the extensive paperwork that comes with grant duties from Martilli, who was helping out with it, to Wiegand.

Lombardi said he had considered discontinuing the town’s participation in the Community Development Block Grant program due to some ongoing issues, but hiring Wiegand allows those issues to be sorted out and for it to continue.

“Now that Dave will be leaving us, it was the perfect opportunity for him to take over the planning and oversee the program,” he said.

Lombardi said Wiegand checks all the boxes on the duties he’s performed in his current job, including reviewing development projects, zoning relief, and technical support for planning, zoning and the historic district commission.

He will earn $70,000 in a full-time capacity, compared to Westcott’s $30,000. He has also agreed to attend all meetings at no overtime costs.

Wiegand holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental planning from Plymouth State University, graduating in 2012, and a graduate certficate in community planning from the University of Rhode Island in 2017.

He has been planning technician in Narragansett since January of last year.

He worked as an intern in the East Greenwich Planning Department from 2012 to 2016, according to his resume, and was working in valet and guest services at the Castle Hill Inn in Newport from 2015 to January of last year. He is an Eagle Scout.
