Charles A. Gillooly – Cumberland

Charles A. Gillooly, 92, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2020, at the Miriam Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of the late Eleanor M. (Hodnett) Gillooly.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Margaret L. (Archibald) Gillooly. He resided and raised his family in Cumberland since 1963.

Following graduation from LaSalle Academy in 1946, Mr. Gillooly entered the United States Army, attaining the rank 2nd Lieutenant, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served his country in the Army for over 17 years. He served an additional 20 years in the Air National Guard, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1982. He received his degree from the U.S. Air Force War College.

Charlie was an avid skier, and could be found trekking the slopes of area resorts in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. He enjoyed this hobby throughout his life, even going skiing on his honeymoon with his beloved Eleanor, and he would ski until the age of 82.

He is survived by his two sons, Ronald C. Gillooly and his wife, Lisa, of Stow, Mass., and Patrick Gillooly and his wife, Christin, of Wellesley, Mass.; his two daughters, Karen Spittell and her husband, Jeff, of Maryland, and Nancy Gillooly of Pawtucket; his sister, Joan Sheridan, of Warwick; his nine grandchildren, Ariel, Andrew, Ryan, Caitlin, Sarah, Fallon, Megan, Alison and Ella; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Charlie's Life Celebration to be held with visiting hours on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at the St. John Vianney Church, 3587 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. Burial with military honors will follow at the Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
