Edward S. Smith III – Cumberland

Edward S. Smith III, of Cumberland and formerly of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at The Holiday Retirement Home, Lincoln, surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of the late Beatrice A. (Nichols) Smith. Born in New York, N.Y., a son of the late Dr. Edward S. Smith II and the late Frances (Breidenbach) Smith, he had lived in Mansfield, Ohio, Franklin, Pa., and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., before moving to Cumberland six months ago.

Mr. Smith was a metallurgical engineer and president of Electralloy in Oil City, Pa., when he retired, and then he began a second career with Pratt Whitney in West Palm Beach, Fa., as a materials engineer, and retired again to Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He received his B.S. in engineering from Virginia Tech and his master’s degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a World War II U. S. Army Air Corps veteran and served in the U. S. Navy Reserve in the Civil Engineering Corps for 35 years retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

He is survived by two sons, Gregory E. Smith and his wife, Beverly, of Cumberland, and Kevin Smith of Fargo, N.D.; two stepdaughters, Pam (Sidie) Benzing of Rockland, Wis., and Jill (Nichols) Hatton of East Islip, N.Y.; two grandsons, Bryan Smith of Henderson, Nev., and Benjamin Smith of Providence; two granddaughters, Kristina Moy of Wilmar, Minn., and Jenna Smith of Lake Worth, Fla.; and two nieces, Sidney Alegre of Modesto, Calif., and Leslie Smith of San Francisco, Calif. He was the brother of the late Claude Smith of Livermore, Calif.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2020, at 10 a.m., in St. Ambrose Church, 191 School St., Albion. His burial, with military honors, will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Smith’s memory to Shriners Hospitals for Children would be appreciated.
