LINCOLN – The Valley Breeze newspapers have placed among the top three winners in 10 categories for the annual Rhode Island Press Association awards. The 10 different categories is a record for the newspapers.

Reporter Lauren Clem, who covers Woonsocket, North Smithfield and Blackstone, Mass., led the way this year with three individual awards and a shared award.

Final awards won’t be announced until a virtual event in September, but here are the winners:

• Headline writing - Ethan Shorey, Lise Barnett and Lauren Clem

• Education story - Lauren Clem

• Special section - Staff

• Best newspaper front page - Lise Barnett

• In-depth news story - Ethan Shorey

• Feature story/short - Lauren Clem

• Feature photo - Robert Emerson

• Religion/spirituality story - Lauren Clem

• Sports feature story - Eric Benevides

• News/features columnist - Laurence J. Sasso Jr.

“Awards are far from our ultimate aim, but our annual strong showing in the RIPA awards reflects our overall mission of making our communities stronger by telling their stories through quality local news coverage,” said Editor Ethan Shorey. “That commitment will not change.”
