Enjoy ‘Candyland Live’ outside NP Library

The North Providence Library now offers Candyland Live.

NORTH PROVIDENCE – Staffers at the North Providence Union Free Library say they have an exciting ongoing outdoor “Candyland Live” game for families and children to enjoy in the area between the library and high school, 1810 Mineral Spring Ave.

Staff members are outside to help children with the game from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day this week, including 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, through this Friday, Sept. 18.

Assistant Circulation Manager Mary Albanese said Children’s Librarian Jenny Durant is very creative, and with all the concerns about the pandemic, she and others are planning programming with safety in mind.

“Programming that can be done outside and with social distancing is a real challenge, but I think our library has managed to provide some great programming for our patrons,” she said. “It is so important to offer these types of programs to engage children and their families.”

The outdoor Candyland can be accessed even while the library is closed, with residents asked only to bring only their own dice and play.

The North Providence Union Free Library is now including the upstairs book stacks in the available browsing area for patrons. Albanese said the library has reopened for browsing hours at limited capacity on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Wednesdays, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Computer usage will be by appointment only by calling the reference desk at 401-353-5600, ext 3.

The library will still offer curbside pickup for patrons Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All patrons entering the building are asked to self-screen for symptoms and must wear a mask.

Materials returned to the library are quarantined for 72 hours. Fines accrued during that time will be waived.

The library also has three new programs for the fall. For families with young children, it has a new “Tale”-gating Storytime that will be outside in the back parking lot (at the pool) on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., beginning Sept. 22 and running through Oct. 27.

It will also have its Virtual Book Club for students in grades 3-5 beginning Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 6:30 p.m. The book club will be on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

The library also has a new Virtual Science Club for those in grades 3-5 and it will meet on the in-between Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. The first meeting for the Science Club will be Sept. 30. All three of these programs require pre-registration.

The library is also welcoming back its local artist, Sue Greco, for two painting classes for children ages 10 and older. The first visit will be on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m., where children will paint their favorite Pokemon character. The second visit will be on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 4 p.m., where they will paint Harry’s owl Hedwig from Harry Potter. Greco’s art programs also require pre-registration.

Call the library at 401-353-5600, ext. 5, for more information about any programs.
