R.I. Coyotes turn two in ABL opener with Chariho

PAWTUCKET – The R.I. North Coyotes, which features former and current high school baseball players from Tolman, Shea, and St. Raphael Academy, kicked off its Autumn Baseball League season in style last Saturday afternoon by sweeping its doubleheader with the Chariho Chargers at Max Read Field by scores of 6-1 and 8-6.

Manny Ortiz did it all for the Coyotes in the first game, as he not only pitched a complete game, but also collected two hits and knocked in a run. Chase Joubert led the way offensively with three hits, two of them doubles, and two RBIs; James Coleman also stole three bases and scored twice, and Ian Montanez drove in two runs.

In the second game, the Coyotes needed extra innings and Nathan Potter’s two-run double in the eighth to put away with Chargers. Coleman also delivered a key hit earlier in the game with a bases-loaded triple.

Trey Thibeault worked the first seven innings on the mound to pick up the win, and Potter picked up a save by tossing a scoreless eighth inning and retiring the fourth, fifth, and sixth batters in the Chargers’ lineup. Thibeault, Brandon Ribeiro, Jacob Faria, and Lonnie Santiago also played well defensively.

The Coyotes will return to their R.I. Division schedule on Saturday with another doubleheader that will begin at 10 a.m., this time in Westerly against the Granite City Jays.
