Stolen gun recovered on Route 146

NORTH SMITHFIELD – North Smithfield Police have arrested a man who was found carrying a firearm stolen out of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Argelis Delacruz, 22, of Worcester was found carrying the stolen Glock 9mm in a vehicle parked outside a business on Route 146. Delacruz was arrested shortly after 2:20 a.m. last Saturday, Oct. 3.

Police also seized $12,542 in cash that was found on Delacruz.

According to North Smithfield Police, Patrol Officer Kyle DelPrete was patrolling in the area of Sayles Hill Road and Route 146 early in the morning on Oct. 3 when he noticed a vehicle parked in the lot of one of the nearby closed businesses. Delacruz and a driver were inside the vehicle. DelPrete approached the vehicle and was speaking with the occupants when he noticed Delacruz had a firearm in his waistband. According to a press release, DelPrete held both occupants at gunpoint until a backup officer arrived and the officers took Delacruz into custody.

Delacruz appeared before a justice of the peace and was released on $10,000 surety bail. He will be required to appear in court at a later date.
