18 arrested on federal drug/firearms charges

WOONSOCKET – Eighteen individuals, including 13 from Woonsocket, have been charged in federal court with trafficking drugs or firearms as a result of a series of FBI Safe Streets Task Force Project Safe Neighborhoods investigations.

Thirteen of those individuals are currently serving terms of state or federal probation, and 15 have been previously convicted of felony drug or firearms charges.

"Operation River Fork" was launched by the Safe Streets Task Force in Woonsocket in January and has expanded to include investigations in Providence, Warwick and Cranston. The investigations identified three separate alleged drug or firearms trafficking rings involving nine individuals. Another eight individuals were charged based on alleged independent drug or firearm trafficking activity.

Earlier this week, law enforcement agents executed search warrants and arrests leading to three loaded firearms, approximately 350 grams of crack cocaine, 130 grams of fentanyl, 120 grams of power cocaine and $122,000 in cash.

Thirteen of the 19 individuals charged face mandatory minimum sentences of five years in federal prison.
