Victim of Pawtucket shooting identified

PAWTUCKET – The victim of a Feb. 18 shooting in Pawtucket has been identified as Jontel Tavares, age 20. It does not appear to have been a random crime, as Tavares was likely specifically targeted, said police.

At around 1:15 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, Pawtucket police and fire personnel responded to the vicinity of 151 Benefit St. for a report of a shooting. The victim, later identified as Tavares, had sustained a gunshot wound. He was located within a vehicle at that location. The victim was transported to Rhode Island hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident is being investigated as a homicide by the Pawtucket Police Major Crime Unit and BCI Divisions.
